Rachael Sanderson - Life a Little Greener
After watching Rachel Ward’s inspiring documentary and hearing the powerful message from Andrew Cameron, Byron Shire's Agricultural Extension Officer, the need to “#growthegrowers,” I felt a renewed sense of purpose. I knew my little veggie patch wasn't going to cut it and wanted to find someone who could help bring my vision for Raven Place Farm to life, someone with the knowledge and passion to farm the land and help build a sustainable future. So, with Andrew's guidance, I took a leap of faith and posted on Facebook, asking for the right person to join me on this journey.
Rachael replied! I knew instantly that the universe was guiding me in the right direction. Rachael’s enthusiasm and shared passion for sustainable farming made her the perfect fit. Together, we’re now building something truly special at Raven Place — a place where dreams, community, and growth can flourish.
Rachael brings her unwavering passion for ecosystem restoration and community sustainability to Raven Place Farm. With a focus on regenerative agriculture, Rachael is dedicated to transforming Raven Place into a thriving farm that not only nourishes the land but also nourishes the community. Her vision includes utilizing composting and large-scale worm farming to recycle waste, while practices like multispecies cover cropping, livestock integration, diverse food forest plantings, and no-till soil management work to sequester carbon and enhance soil health.
Raven Place Farm also functions as an educational hub, offering free open days, workshops, and farm tours to empower the community with regenerative farming knowledge. In partnership with the non-profit organization We Forest Earth, the farm is committed to restoring the riparian zone through chemical-free bush regeneration. This includes using edible and medicinal native mycelium to phase out invasive species such as camphor laurel and privet. By converting biomass into food and medicine, including mushrooms, this project fosters biodiversity and supports the replanting of endangered species and native edible plants, creating a healthier, more sustainable environment for all.
